Eggs Are Good For The Heart

Eggs are not bad for heart health, say experts. US egg expert Dr Don McNamara insists that their bad reputation is no longer warranted and even Heart Foundation has lifted its recommended intake to six eggs a week.

“Seniors have been afraid to eat eggs because for 40 years they have been worried about the dietary cholesterol,”” the Herald Sun quoted nutritional biochemist McNamara as saying.

“But, over the years, the research has clearly shown that cholesterol in our food doesn’t impact our risk for heart disease – (what causes) that is saturated fat and trans fat,”’ he added.

Eggs are low in saturated fat and consist of some of the vital compounds like choline that are considered good for metabolism and for foetal brain development during pregnancy [Read more...]

Almonds Curb Diabetes, Heart Disease

A new study – conducted at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – has suggested that eating almonds could help prevent diabetes and heart disease.

Scientists discovered that including the nuts into our diets could help treat type 2 diabetes. As well as combating the condition, linked to obesity and physical inactivity, it could tackle cardiovascular disease, they said.

Diabetics have a shortage of insulin or a decreased ability to use the hormone that allows glucose to enter cells and be converted to energy.

When diabetes is not controlled, glucose and fats remain in the blood and over time, damage vital organs. [Read more...]

Behind The New Gold Rush

Is the next perfect bubble building up around the yellow metal? The price of gold has gone up from $256 an ounce in 2001 to $1,424. Meanwhile, price levels have struggled or crashed with respect to almost all other asset classes. Central banks have slashed interest rates. Yet, gold prices, it has been predicted, may go up and up. The many reasons for this renewed love are convincing. Interestingly, not long ago pundits had predicted the end of gold as the world’s default asset class and were clubbing it with commodities. It appears that the yellow metal is making a comeback to reassert the pre-eminence it has enjoyed for 5,000 years of history.

Its supply is falling. No new mines have been discovered. The existing ones are getting exhausted, and miners are digging as deep as 5 km. Gold content in ore has come down from almost 12 gm a tonne to 2 gm. And it costs more and more to take that out.

Environmental concerns have also contributed to mine-owners’ problems. The wages of miners are going up; so is the cost of providing them safety and security. [Read more...]

Dollar Stays In Upper 82 Yen Range In Tokyo After China’s Rate Hike+

The U.S. dollar traded narrowly in the upper 82 yen zone in quiet Monday morning deals in Tokyo, little changed from its levels late last week in New York, with China’s interest rate hike over the weekend having limited impact.

At noon, the dollar fetched 82.92-82.93 yen against 82.82-92 yen in New York and 82.96-98 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.

The euro changed hands at $1.3117-3121 and 108.76-80 yen versus $1.3118-3128 and 108.70-80 yen in New York and $1.3133-3135 and 108.95-99 yen in Tokyo late Friday.

Trading was thin in the morning, with market participants not moving actively because some overseas markets remain closed for Christmas holidays, a foreign exchange trader said.

Although some market players were cautious that the yen may strengthen against the dollar in tandem with other Asian currencies following China’s 0.25 percentage point hike on benchmark lending and deposit rates, announced Saturday, it moved in a tight range as China’s move was perceived as within market expectations, dealers said.
