On Sunday, Simpson took to her Twitter account to share her latest health regime with her fans.

Fitness First Aims For Asia Flotation

The private equity owners of health chain Fitness First are eyeing up a stock market flotation, which would likely value the business at up to £2bn, but is turning its back on London for an Asian exchange.

BC Partners is considering whether to press ahead with a Fitness First flotation despite the stock market volatility that has forced other private equity companies to abandon similar initial public offerings (IPOs). If BC does decide to float part of the company, it is likely to seek a listing in either Hong Kong or Shanghai.

BC favours an Asian float as the region is seen as a more lucrative source of future growth. “The company is looking at different options… Given the growth in Asia, it is quite sensible for BC to consider floating there,” said a source close to the deal.

It is understood that any flotation, which could value Fitness First at between £1bn and £2bn, would take place next year. [Read more...]

Broadband Spurs New Businesses And Ideas In Kenya

When Kenyan graduate Roy Wachira, 25, set out to start his first business, he turned to the Internet, whose growth in the east African nation is spawning opportunities unthinkable even a year ago.

Wachira runs a free social photography site that allows users to view special occasions or travel photos online and provides firms such as telecoms operator Safaricom with a channel to reach their targeted consumers.

The site is one of many innovations in east Africa’s biggest economy spurred by faster Internet speeds through three fibre-optic cables which link Kenya with the rest of the world.

Since the arrival of the TEAMS and SEACOM cables last year and a third one called EASSy last March, costs have fallen to as low as $22 per megabyte from $4,000 previously. Usage has jumped to 15 gigabytes from 1.8 gigabytes eight months ago.

“It is a good time to break into online in Kenya, there is a surge in usage of Internet here,” says Wachira. [Read more...]

Thin, Efficient Solar Panels To Be Built In Southwest Idaho Could Be Available Next Year

A company formed by Boise-based Micron Technology Inc. and Origin Energy of Australia says it plans to start making extremely thin but highly efficient solar cells that will be available next year.

Transform Solar officials say the so-called sliver solar cells will be made at a plant in Boise where Micron once made computer chips, and the cells will be combined into solar panels at another plant owned by Micron in Nampa.

“There is nothing comparable to sliver (cells) on the market,” Phil Mackey of Transform Holdings told the Idaho Statesman.

He said Transform Solar has hired 70 employees and expects to hire up to 50 more, with most of the jobs based in southwest Idaho.

Micron and Origin late last year announced the agreement that officials said takes advantage of Origin’s experience in energy markets and Micron’s expertise in making thin semiconductors. [Read more...]

Euro Continues Slide Against Dollar

The euro continued its slide against the US dollar in the morning session, mirroring investors’ lack of confidence in the continent’s ailing economies.

Ahead of the G20 summit in Canada this weekend, investors sold European stocks, bonds and currencies, adding to the pressure on EU politicians to resolve their differences and agree a 27-member growth package.

Analysts have warned that extreme budget cuts in the US, Britain, Spain, Greece and Germany will dent growth and job and income creation.

“Concerns over the resilience of the US recovery, weak technicals in the S&P 500 and renewed concerns over the health of UK banks (…) have all increased risk aversion ahead of this weekend’s G-20 summit in Toronto,” said Jane Foley, research director at Forex.com.

The European currency lost 0.5% to $1.2269 by noon.

Royal Bank of Canada wrote in a research note: “Austerity measures today may address sovereign fiscal problems, but the longer-term potential ramifications on corporates, consumption and economic growth of such tightening can create challenges in their own right.” The Guardian
