States Should Set Up EGoM On Agriculture: Sharad Pawar

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Friday said the States should set up an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) under the chairmanship of Chief Ministers to cover all aspects of agriculture.

Pawar said Rs 400 crore has been allocated to implement the Green Revolution Plan for the eastern states.

“An amount of Rs.400 crore has been allocated to carry out the plan. Eastern India has a huge untapped potential for intensifying cropping and for increasing crop, particularly for rice maize and pulses crop,” said Pawar briefing the media on the workshop on ‘The Green Revolution’ organised here.

Pawar also emphasized that the Green Revolution can be brought to eastern part of the country, with proper support to hardworking farmers.

Summer Desserts Steal The Spotlight

As summer party season begins, flags will flutter for the Fourth of July, and families will dust off the grill and break out the cotton tablecloths for a season’s worth of picnics and celebrations.

The trick, of course, is making those events memorable and delicious without making them labor-intensive. And a spectacular dessert that showcases summer’s bounty leaves a gorgeous, lasting impression.

Fletcher’s most recent book, “Eating Local: The Cookbook Inspired by America’s Farmers” (Andrews McMeel, $35), is a love letter to the nation’s small, organic farms, and it brims with dessert ideas. Pile On Summer Fruits

Now is the time to start packing in all the fruit you’ve been missing from your diet in the past year.

Between now and fall, there’s cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew, blueberries, strawberries, cherries and more.

Look for produce that is locally grown. It hasn’t traveled as far to get to you, so it’s more planet-friendly than food that has had to be shipped cross-country.

That means it has also had less time to lose nutritional value.

In fact, if you need another nutritional nudge, consider that fresh fruit is high in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It contains a big dose of beneficial phytochemicals, including antioxidants.

Fresh fruit is low in calories, and it’s high in water content. Filling up on fruit is a good way to control your weight and stay hydrated this summer.

Soup to salad

Eating fruit the way it comes from the store or farmers market is great, but the goal of this column is to keep you interested in eating more fresh fruit more often. So here are some ideas aimed at inspiring you to keep it coming:

Incorporate it creatively. Use cantaloupe or honeydew to make cooling melon soup. Find recipes online or come up with your own by combining melon chunks with nonfat plain or vanilla yogurt and a little honey.

Process the ingredients in a blender, adding enough orange juice to create the consistency you like. Serve melon soup in bowls with a little ground nutmeg on top. [Read more...]
