Scientists Studying Wild Mangoes To Try To Fight Fungal Disease

Wild mangoes could hold the key to increasing resistance to a devastating disease of the commercial crop.

Mango anthracnose is a fungal disease which can cause large, sunken black bruises on the fruit, making it unsaleable.

While the disease can be controlled with chemical sprays, most of the commercial varieties have little or poor natural resistance.

So researchers in Queensland are now looking at the wild relatives of mangoes to see if they could provide a genetic boost to resistance levels.

However, principal horticulturalist Dr Ian Bally says genetically modified mangoes aren’t on the horizon. [Read more...]

Diet Alone Helps Lower Bad Cholesterol – Study

A diet packed full of “cholesterol-lowering” ingredients such as nuts, beans and high-fibre grains cut bad cholesterol better than a low-saturated-fat diet, even though both diets were vegetarian, according to a Canadian study.

The drop in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the so-called bad cholesterol — was big enough that dietary changes could be an alternative to statin medications for many people, said researchers led by David Jenkins at the University of Toronto.

“There’s no question that statins have made a major difference in terms of cardiovascular disease control,” he told Reuters Health of the study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. [Read more...]

Natural Chemical Found In Grapes May Protect Against Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have found that grape seed polyphenols—a natural antioxidant—may help prevent the development or delay the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The research, led by Giulio Maria Pasinetti, MD, PhD, The Saunder Family Professor in Neurology, and Professor of Psychiatry and Geriatrics and Adult Development at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, was published online in the current issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

This is the first study to evaluate the ability of grape-derived polyphenols to prevent the generation of a specific form of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide, a substance in the brain long known to cause the neurotoxicity associated with Alzheimer disease. In partnership with a team at the University of Minnesota led by Karen Hsiao Ashe, MD, PhD, Dr. Pasinetti and his collaborators administered grape seed polyphenolic extracts to mice genetically determined to develop memory deficits and Aβ neurotoxins similar to those found in Alzheimer’s disease. They found that the brain content of the Aβ*56, a specific form of Aβ previously implicated in the promotion of Alzheimer’s disease memory loss, was substantially reduced after treatment. Want To Reduce Your Belly Fat? Eat Apples, Green Peas And Beans

According to the researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre, vegetables, fruit and beans contain more soluble fiber and will help reduce visceral fat, or belly fat, around the midsection.

They found that for every 10-gram increase in soluble fiber eaten per day, visceral fat was reduced by 3.7 percent over five years. In addition, increased moderate activity resulted in a 7.4 percent decrease in the rate of visceral fat accumulation over the same time period. [Read more...]

Malaysia Durians Challenge Thai Dominance In China

Malaysia will start exporting durians to mainland China from July, challenging Thailand’s virtual monopoly on shipments of the spiky, stinky delicacy that many Southeast Asians hail as “the king of fruits.”

The breakthrough Tuesday for Malaysia’s durian growers comes after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Kuala Lumpur last month and formally agreed to allow the entry of Malaysian durians, which some fans insist are deliciously creamier and more aromatic than Thai-grown ones. [Read more...]

Orange Juice Futures Rise On Hurricane Speculation

Orange juice futures rose 3.3 percent Friday as investors weighed the possibility that hurricanes could disrupt the supply of oranges.

The price of frozen orange juice futures typically begins to increase as the hurricane season gets under way. Orange juice futures rose 5.8 cents to settle at $1.8285 a pound, the highest since late February.

The U.S. Agriculture Department earlier this week estimated this year’s crop at 8.82 million tons. That was about 1 percent less than the April forecast but 7 percent more than the 2009-2010 season. [Read more...]

Balance Proteins For A Long Life

A diet containing just the right mix of proteins may be more important than reducing calories for a long and healthy life, according to new study on fruit flies.

According to researchers, the study could help explain why ‘dietary restriction’ (also known as calorie restriction) – reducing food intake whilst maintaining sufficient quantities of vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients – appears to have health benefits.

In many organisms, such as the fruit fly (drosophila), mice, rats and the Rhesus monkey, these benefits include living longer. [Read more...]
